Practice, practice and more practice

(April 22, 2025)

Various events, festivals, military parades and honour processions are fast approaching and it is incumbent upon every piper, drummer and great highland dancer to fine tune and hone their skills to ensure we put on the very best show that we can.

Interestingly, if you take the pipes for example, there are so many parts that can be 'out of sync' whether that be the chanter reed, the drone reeds, the drones, leaks in the bag, joints etc, playing ability etc - all contirbuting to either that glorious sound of numerous pipers sounding as one, or multiple pipers sounding like a pack of angry cats squaling along.

We are very fortunate at the Seaforth highlanders Leicester to have and be led by some exceptional pipers who's attention to detail is second to none in ensuring the right notes and embellishments are all played the same, that instruments are in fine working order, that drones are all in tune - so much so, that we we all strike in, we get that wonderful full rich sound of all pipers sounding just like one and all playing the exact same tune rather than various minor interpretation differences. It is this time and effort that really helps to make the difference between a pipe band and a 'PIPE BAND'

Of course, and in addition, the same principle applies to the drums and highland dancers and it is this dedication to getting it right first time every time that raises the morale, creates a positive buzz and elicits the positive and wonderful responses from the various audiences.

Interestingly, many of the general public will not, respecfully, know how and what is involved to ensure pipes are in tune and working working properly, or that drummers and dancers and pipers are all working in sync together, but they'll surely know when things are out eg tuning and that's the concern when the listening public walk away with a grimace on the face similar to 'sucking a lemon' :-)

Thanks to our Pipe Major and Seargents for all working to ensure we uphold the very high standards that are expected and delivered.

We look forward to seeing you out and obout very shortly and oh' by the way, if youve ever fancied trying out the pipes, drums or dancing - then just drop us an email at [email protected]
